Niche Sites Basics Part 1

If your thinking of making niche sites for AdSense or some other Affiliates like Amazon and your new to it all then this post is for you. Im guessing you want to get started in making some passive income online of some sort then here is an easy way to get started.Ill let you know the first basic steps without going into too much detail to get you started. I had to learn all this from scratch just 4 weeks ago so its not hard and Ill send you in the right direction. I wont go into to much detail as that post would be so big it may be daunting. But let me assure you if you want to get started its simple and you will learn quickly. First of all let me share with you some of the best resources out there for learning more that I read/listen to regulary.

  1. http://www.nichepursuits.com/
  2. http://adsenseflippers.com/
  3. http://www.stevescottsite.com/
  4. http://www.smartpassiveincome.com/

These are some of the top sites you should be reading if you are new to this. The amount of information these sites have is mind blowing. The only thing you should remember is not to get bogged down just reading. Eventually you just need to jump in and do it. Even if you do it wrong it wont matter you will learn form your mistakes. As you will see in my monthly report I did almost everything wrong for my first site but the one after that was better and the 3rd one was pretty on par. You dont need a huge investment to do this either just a few $$$ can get you started.

Lets start with one or two site’s thats all I did. You can do it easily, then just build from your knowledge. Here is the basics of what you will need

  1. Google Email Account
  2. Google Analytics Account
  3. Goole Adsense Account
  4. Hosting (Hostgator is cheap) $9.95/month
  5. knowledge of wordpress
  6. Articles written ( Iwriter is pretty good start)

Step 1 Finding A keyword

Visit Google Keyword Tool at first to find your first keyword (long tail pro makes this easy). This may take some time to get used to but once you get it its easy. This is a simple summary of what you need to do I tried to leave out exact small details just the basics of what you need to do. Once at Google Keyword Tool sign in other wise you will not see the CPC (approximate cost per click) make sure you select [EXACT] on the side bar so search results are accurate . You are looking for words 2-4 long. Simply Put this into the search box and hit search. Order the results in whatever way is easier for you to find you keyword for example- Hit “competition” so that it shows competition from high-low. What you are looking for is keywords with High competition (this is high advertising competition not high competition to rank for) and around 800- 3000 searches globally per month that will be easy to rank for after writing a few articles and small amount of SEO (you will check this later). You should also be looking for keyword with a minimum  amount of $10….that is the CPC (cost per click) x (global monthly searches) x 1%. To save time here open a domain search website eg Crazydomains or GoDaddy and make sure a domain is available if not move on to the next word. LongTailPro makes all this easy so you should check it out.

  • Here is an example of a bad keyword-   “toiletries to pack”
  • Here is an example of a fairly good keyword “24 hour plumbing service

however we did not select “24 hour plumbing service” didn’t like it all yours if you want it

Step 2 Check your SEO competition

Check your keyword is not too hard to rank for (one again long tail pro makes this easy) but for now just visit Google.com or if your trying to rank for another country like Australia (Google.com.au)  and look to see what come up in the search engine. Your really looking for a few things and here are a few good signs- Pictures at the top, Blogs at the top, sites with out the exact match and exact description of the keyword. A few bad signs are- root domains, Many Authority sites, Many sites with exact match description or title is also a bad sign

Step 3 Buy Domain

Great! You found your keyword I hope its a winner. You have passed the most difficult part now you need to purchase the domain just start with buying 1 or 2. It should cost you around $10 per domain. Godaddy is a good place to start and its probably the most popular place do buy domains.

Step 4 Hosting

Now you have your domain change the name servers to you hosting account- for example Hostgator. Hostgator is easy to use and easy to set up wordpress even if you are not technical. There are a few ways to install wordpress. The easiest way is to use a cool feature like Hostgator has. Just watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3B_k1KqW0Dg this will explain how to add wordress to the domain you just created.

Thats it for now we will go through the final basic steps you need to go through in the next post just to keep you on the edge of your seat. So stay tuned for Niche Sites Basics Part 2 coming soon :)

    Hi Matt

I spoke with Justin and Joe (AdSense Flippers) a while back about global versus local searches and you actually want 800+ local searches. The reason is that the CPC data is country specific. So you might have 800 global searches and a CPC $1.00 in the US but only 200 local (US) searches. The other 600 could be from countries only paying $0.10 which really screws you.

All this brings me to three other tips:

    1. Make sure you change the country to US unless you are specifically targeting another country. If you’re outside of the US the local data and CPCs will probably default to your country which may display different CPC’s.

    2. You can force Google to display search results from different countries by adding &gl=US (or what ever country you want) to the search results URL.

    3. If want to see the ads that Google displays (which is useful sometimes) then you will need a proxy in the country you plan to optimize for. I’ve seen keywords with high competition but when I searched them almost no ads appeared because there is no competition in Australia.

    Good luck,
       Rich

    Hi Rich,

Cheers for dropping by, Thanks for some great tips there when trying to find key words. The first point you bring up about changing location to US and getting 800+ searches is very important but I didnt put in the post as I was trying not to go into too much detail other wise the post would have been 20000 words long  hehe. The 3rd point you make i actually didnt know you could do that perhaps that is something I will need to look into. By the way what sort of sites are you building and how long have you been doing it for?

      Hi Matt

It’s kind of a long story. While I’ve been building web sites/applications since 1995 I never really got into the make money online scene until recently. Even then it was more in an IT professional capacity as the company I work for are internet marketers. Over that time I’ve had a few blogs that were written for me rather than to make money.

In December last year I decided to look a lot closer at niche and authority sites (an area that work isn’t involved in). My production volume is still really low while I figure out how to automate the process as much as possible. I’m also looking at other options like building SaaS web apps.
