I have been thinking a lot about consistency lately and how I can improve this part of my life. Too often in my life I get extremely passionate about a particular topic for a few weeks or even a few days only for that over exuberant passion and excitement to quickly fade out and I go back to months of months of inactivity, until months down the track I begin the cycle all over again.
If you ask my buddy Matt he will confirm that this is certainly the case, even once giving me the line …
“If there is one thing you are consistent at … it’s being inconsistent”
It is something I and I am sure many other need to address, for you cannot be truly great at something (anything really) without being consistent.
So here it is I have put together a list of tips I think will help myself and others to become more consistent in their daily lives …
1. Determine What Is Truly Important To You
You will only be consistent with those things that are truly important to you. Determine what your goals and aspirations are and make sure whatever you are trying to be consistent with aligns with that.
2. Focus On Just A Few
We have all heard this one before … it’s hard to change many habits at once, just focus on changing a few at a time, that way you might actually stick to it.
3. Implement Them Into Your Daily Routine
Make sure you work towards your goals in some way on a daily basis. Make it a part of your lifestyle.
4. Forgive Yourself
We are not machines, none of us are consistent 100% of the time. Occasionally we all slip up. It’s important that when we do we can quickly forgive ourself and not be too hard.
I am guilty of doing this to myself a lot … I get down on myself and beat myself, causing even a further downward spiral.
5. Get Back On Track ASAP
What do they say … “If you fall off a horse, it is important to get straight back on” … The quicker you do this, the quicker you get back into the consistent rhythm and the easier it is.
6. Time Is Required To Form A Habit
You need to give it a while. It will be hard at first, but eventually a habit will begin to form and it will become a lot easier and eventually you will not even think about it anymore.
7. Being Flexible Is Essential To Success
Things happen in life. We must adapt to the situation and be able to run with it. If your schedule is so rigid that if the slightest unexpected event occurs, which throws out your whole day, then you will remain an inconsistent person forever.
8. Daily Basis Rather Than Weekly or Monthly
Doing something everyday is a lot easier to be consistent at then something done on weekly or monthly basis.
9. Remind Yourself
Leave notes, make a task list. Whatever you can do to remind yourself at first
10. Set Smaller Goals
Break large goals into smaller ones. Example, you want to lose 10kg in 4 months … then make sure every month you aim to lost 2.5 kg
11. Track Progress
Track everything … sometimes it feels like we are not making progress when infact we are … tracking gives you the motivation to keep going.
12. Reward Yourself
Set milestones and reward yourself when you reach them. Like I said earlier, break down your goals into smaller ones … well when you reach those small goals … reward yourself!
13. Be Accountable To Someone
Tell someone about your goals, someone that will hold you to it, someone that you will get embarrassed if you fail. I mentioned in a recent post that I started joined a mastermind group … the main reason why this works so well, is I dont want to go to the next meetup with no results … I will feel like an idiot
14. Use A Calendar
This is something I have only recently implemented. Never used one in the past, but now everything i do on a regular basis gets added to a calendar so I never have to think about it again.
15. Be Clear With What You Are Trying To Achieve
Clear and specific … don’t say you are trying to lose weight … how much weight exactly are you trying to lose and by when.
This is quite an “airy fairy” blog post, but one that is important to the success of any person in any walk of life.
